Catherine Mansell to Feature Artwork at The Cooked Goose

Westerly artist Catherine Mansell is pleased to feature a collection of her mixed media artworks in a special exhibition at The Cooked Goose at 92 Watch Hill Road, Watch Hill RI 02891 through the holiday season and into February, 2022. The exhibition features 32 works in range of media including oil, watercolor, ink, encaustic, and cold wax, among others. The space will be open 8am – 3pm daily.

Catherine Mansell is an ink, oil, and wax artist who combines traditional Asian Ink painting with the ancient art of encaustic painting to beautiful and unique results. Her artistic process requires that many layers of wax are built up with repeated strokes using brushes, heat guns, ski wax irons, propane torches and Japanese carving tools. In addition to encaustic wax, other mediums include oil, cold wax, imported and handmade papers, Chinese watercolor, indigo dye and mica. Embedded in wax, or under glass, all the pieces are carefully designed with archival practices.

The diverse collection of paintings is beautifully displayed throughout the space, complementing the venue’s long tradition of hospitality in the area by highlighting a talented local artist. All the works are available for sale in the exhibition, which was curated by Pawcatuck artist Diane Brown. The Cooked Goose owners Jennifer Gibson and Andrew Nathan say they enjoy hosting regular exhibitions of local art at their restaurant “because the guests like it”.

2021 has been a busy year for Mansell, who has exhibited her work widely in over 20 exhibitions throughout the region and beyond. This has included participation in exhibitions at Spring Bull Gallery in Newport, RI, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society in Pawtucket, RI, the Lyme Art Association in Lyme, CT, the Mystic Museum of Art in Mystic, CT, as well as the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly. She was also featured in distinguished national exhibitions hosted by the Sumi-e Society of America and the Allied Artists of America at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

Of the current show, Mansell said “I am thrilled to share this collection of my recent works with friends and neighbors in my community and am grateful to The Cooked Goose for the opportunity to enliven their beautiful space with my artwork.”
